A vehicle is a big investment for a person and leather seats usually come with an added cost. It’s important to take care of the leather seats in your vehicle. Leather can become worn, torn or even discolored. None of that makes for a good ride.

Cleaning

First, you’ll want to inspect the seats to make sure there is no damage to the leather itself. Be sure to look for holes or tears in the leather. You’ll want to avoid getting any cleaning fluids behind the leather and onto the interior foam of the seat. Those fluids can damage the interior foam.

Third, do a test spot with your cleaner. By doing this, you’ll make sure the cleaner works and won’t damage the leather. Be sure to test a spot that’s out of regular view just in case you encounter an issue. If there are no problems, go ahead and follow the directions specified on your bottle of leather cleaner. A microfiber cloth would be perfect to use. You may also want to use a soft-bristle brush or a soft sponge for those stubborn spots. Use a dry microfiber cloth to dry off the seats. If it becomes too wet, use a fresh dry cloth.

Conditioning

leather seatsAfter you’ve cleaned the seats, you’ll want to condition the leather. Conditioning the leather will help to restore the natural oils. You’ll want to make sure you use a high quality conditioner without silicone or petroleum products so you won’t be left with greasy looking seats. It’s also good to use a conditioner with sunscreen. Yes, that’s right! A leather conditioner with a sunscreen additive will help block harmful UV rays that can cause serious damage. Be sure to use a clean microfiber cloth for this process as well. Once this step is done, just leave your car parked in the shade (or in a garage) for at least 12 hours. This will allow the conditioner to soak into the leather without being harmed by the sun. Once it’s had time to soak in, go over the seats again with another microfiber cloth, buffing the leather as you go. This will remove any excess conditioner and give your seats a really nice shine.
